For the two weeks of July 26th through August 8th here on Earth, the various Mystara D&D campaigns of The Game Shop’s Basement will have their sessions for those two weeks occur on the 15th of Yarthmont on the Mystaran calendar, the Night of the Blood Red Moon.
This event will impact and crossover into every Mystara session for those two weeks!
No matter if your party is currently in a pre-written module with a storyline “on rails”. No matter if your party is currently in a dungeon crawl moving door to door and trap to trap. No matter if your party if currently between quests wandering Mystara maps in an open-world sandbox fashion.
Once a year, on the night of the 15th of Yarthmont, the moon turns blood red over the Principalities of Glantri. All wizards, sorcerers, artificers, arcane tricksters, and eldritch knights attain an altered state of consciousness that night. For that one night, hey gain a temporary extra point of Intelligence as their perception and understanding of the magic all around them is enhanced.
But there’s a downside.
Each affected person must make a Saving Throw versus their own Intelligence score, so the smarter you are, the harder it is to resist the downside effect.
If the save is made. Nothing happens. Enjoy your night of an extra Intelligence point.
If the save is failed by a little, the character has a slightly intoxicated buzz for the night.
If the save is failed by a medium amount, the character is wildly drunk on their enhanced connection to the magic around them. At the end of the night, they will pass out and not remember anything that happened (including discoveries they made or magic spells or formulas they learned that night with their extra Intelligence point). But….if one fails by a LOT.….well….
Such a character hallucinates wildly for the rest of the night. Although the hallucinations aren’t real, the character’s responses to them will be real. Imagine an insane, hallucinating archmage throwing very real fireballs, lightning bolts, and disintegration spells at everything around them because they are seeing things that aren’t really there and they are temporarily insane for one night.
Normally, the Night of the Blood Red Moon only affects the Principalities of Glantri, not the whole planet Mystara. But this year, for some as yet unrevealed reason, the event is worldwide! Why? What’s going on? Will it stay worldwide from now on? Will the Mystara players at The Game Shop’s Basement be involved in solving this mystery as their respective campaign time slots continue? Visit the Game Shop’s Basement Discord server to find out.
